First race of the season on the mighty Powerplay with the new owner Peter Cunningham. He absolutely loved it and got the hang of driving her very quickly.
Great call from Ned on the start with 1 reef that kept it perfect for the reach down to the first mark. Good breeze upwind and light as expected throughout the Channel. Got caught in a Very fruity squall or down draft on the N leg from Stromboli. We saw 50kts TWS with the solent and full main which was a big lesson learnt for everybody!
Awesome news that Peter Cunningham has purchased the MOD 70 Concise to complete a year at least of racing on the beast. The boat has been renamed Powerplay and Peter has decided to keep the Team Concise crew on for the season which is great news because I am part of the team:)
We started on 22 March 2018 and arrived in San Francisco on 14th May 2018. Over 6000nm. Very lucky all in all with the weather. Lots of motoring was had and managed to get past the bad sections of the trip with good conditions. The hardest section being from Cabo, Mexico up to San Diego, USA. This 1000nm section is hard on the nose and very bad sea state. Sea sickness conditions. We punched through it in 7 days and arrived with no problems. Downwind from the carib at the start of the trip wa...
We left the gorgeous Virgin Gorda, BVI on the 21st May on a nice E 18kts TWS forecast for Bermuda. We had to put out foot down to beat the wind due to arrive 5 days later in Bermuda.
First day was fast and wet and last 2 days were fair and a day on motoring.
Bumped into a friend on arrival to Bermuda and rafted alongside his ketch in probably the best spot in Bermuda. Sheltered and stunning with just a short hop out to get into the AC zone. Great guys onboard and a party zone.
Arrival in Barbados had to be celebrated with some Kitesurfing at Long beach and Silver sands. Great to find out that an old friend from Poole was on the island teaching at the same time so got some time to kite with the guys from Easy Riders.
After Barbados we headed for the following:
- Martinique (south then East) with the light breeze it was perfect for exploring
We started from Canet, France headed for Barbados via lanzerote. Canet was super hard to leave from as expected in the winter time. Big E sea's blocked us in during December.
We managed to leave just before Xmas by getting someone to call the wave sets at the harbour entrance but due to big sea and debris in the Mediterranean we had no choice but to pull into Barcelona during xmas and wait for the weather system to die down for a week.
We left Barcelona just after xmas on a nice forecast...
A few words from Paul Larsen after a testing Volvo Round Ireland Yacht Race:
Incredible race that had it all. Gutted to have missed this one in the last minutes but sometimes in sailing, well... you get that. There were some real hairy moments out there. There was lots of fog and rain. We rounded right underneath the Fastnet Rock with the beam from the lighthouse eerily sweeping across the top of the rig... but we couldn't see anything else. The full rig VMG downwind run down the back was fas...
Ned Collier Wakefield, skipper of Concise 10, is relishing the prospect of taking on Musandam-Oman Sail. The British MOD 70 will be returning to RORC racing after a spectacular duel with Phaedo3 in the RORC Transatlantic Race and the RORC Caribbean 600.
"Oman Sail has been the scratch boat for the MOD70s for a long time and it will be interesting to line up against them" commented Ned Collier Wakefield. " We have huge respect for them, in what they have achieved. We found over...
